The Whiskey Detective's scotch knowledge is limited, we admit it. However, we are expanding that knowledge all the time. It's become clear that both Draper Pryce and myself enjoy scotch, we just don't enjoy peat. I don't care how high on the shelf it is, if you hand me a tumbler that smells like burnt grass, I'm going to hand it right back to you.
For many the flavor that the peat brings out is what makes Scotch what it is, but we've had a nice little run with very tasty bottles that avoid the use, or at least the flavor, of peat. This brings us to the focus of today's post: Glenfiddich 12 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Glenfiddich distillery produces four different ages of scotch consistently. This bottle of 12 year is their youngest product, which makes me want to explore his older siblings (15, 18, and 21 years old). However, they have over a dozen more varieties and ages available. Well, maybe not available. For instance, the 1937 Rare Collection is sold out, but bottles come up at auction now and again. Don't know about you, but the Whiskey Detectives are a long way from buying bottles at auction. I did find a bottle of 40 year for sale on-line for a mere $3,000. Yowzer! Keep in mind these are rare bottles, their core products are much more reasonable.
Cost - $36 for 750ml
Content - 40% ABV
Age - 12 years
Interesting Bottle Fact - "Our Signature Whisky" aged in Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks.
-Deep nose, hints of molasses
-Thick, caramel-y texture
-Taste the oak, but very little smoke
-Smooth, with a little tingle on the tongue
Verdict: Sip it
If you prefer very smokey, peaty Scotch then Glenfiddich 12 Year is not for you. However, if your palette aligns with the Whiskey Detectives than this is a bottle worth picking up. I really enjoyed this bottle, and I'm very happy to have found another scotch that I know I will like. There are few things more frustrating than buying a bottle and realizing you'll never drink it after a couple sips. From this point forward, I know I can count on Glenfiddich to produce a bottle I'll enjoy.
